about

Cuba's renowned master crooner Beny Moré wrote many eternal rumbas. La Culebra is a simple tale of a man who is on his way to work when he is imperiled by a snake on his path. He tries to avoid the snake.

To me though, there is more to the song than this mere encounter. The man is going to work at a brutal molienda - at a sugar mill. He is probably, like Beny, of African ancestry. He fears the snakes bite, for if he is bitten he cannot walk, and if he cannot walk he cannot work. And if he cannot work?

Here, in a clipped, almost fanciful portrait, Benny paints an evocative picture of life for some in the 'old days.'
