about

Ahoy,

Allow me to submit for your listening pleasure a fresh new batch of Deivito songs:
The Zero Demos: Canto Cero

Although their number is a smallish 7 tracks - not enough to merit the designation of an entire album yet amounting to wee more than an EP's worth - I reckon the sum of these sampler tunes as an overdue demo. Fittingly as they are simply hewed 4-track recordings.

Most of the tunes are renditions of favorite Cuban son montuno and rumba classics. The rest are comprised of old originals of mine; a cover of a folksy song written ages ago by an old friend; a sunny number from Haiti; and an inspired experiment derived from a combination of Puerto Rican onomatopoeian poetry and righteous guaguanco grooves.

These Spanish, English and Patois tunes reflect the cultural fricasee which I constantly enjoy exploring. The songs that comprise The Zero Demos were the best of a crop recorded between February-April 2013, and are a gumbo of classical guitar, Puerto Rican Cuatro guitar, the Bolivian Charango, a dash of Kalimba thumb piano, a keyboard, and the Jarana of Veracruz, Mexico.

I'll add that Radio Jarocho's Gabriel Guzman (and his Jarana workshop family) have been quite inspiring, and his opinions regarding my renditions (particularly of Nico Saquito's work) have been inestimably encouraging.

My reverent approach to pan Latin American music is also greatly inspired by Juan Cartagena & Segunda Quimbamba - Jersey City's exemplars of cultural stewardship.

Carlos Cartagena (of Polyabuse fame and fellow United States of Boogaloo band member) has also been thoughtfully encouraging of my wild-eyed experiments. Kindred spirits The Krays (check out "Sangre"), Outernational (Todos Somos Ilegales!), and Kagero also fueled my fascination with polyglot stews.

Mostly, though, were it not for my wonderful superhero girlfriend Rocio Magaña I simply would not have gotten off my lazy ass and back into the realm of making, baking, and finishing songs to share with those who enjoy such things. For that, and more, I am very grateful to her.

7 tracks are available - and, in addition, there is a bonus alternate version of Adios Compay Gato which features my father Santos Garcia telling one of his "best" jokes.

The pictures attached to the individual songs, by the way, are photos I took of the shed that mi papa Santos built and painted. I like his work bunches and so I'm sharing them with you's.

Cheers,

Deivito,
