Son Antropo is not the first song I've written in Spanish, but it is certainly the one I am most proud of. The roots in this song run quite deep.

The bouncing rhythms that course throughout Antropo extend from the influences of the incomparable Trio Matamoros (I'll happily spend the rest of my life in music merely trying to ape the vivacity of Miguel Matamoros' rhythm guitar).

The joy with which I sing this song owes much to the contagious joy and energy one hears in the indomitable guarachas of the late master Polo Montañez.

And then there are the more local, tri-state area, roots: Segunda Quimbamba and Radio Jarocho. Their respective stewardship of Puerto Rico's Bomba y Plena and Mexico's Son Jarocho traditions have inspired and buoyed my creative endeavors with their the open-armed encouragement, friendship, and their elegant magic of performing centuries-old music that makes you dance.

Overall though, as my dominant language is English, I took on the task of studying and learning from the Latin American folkloric traditions and music that this song embodies, something that required painstaking concentration and work. This said, I remind myself of how, to quote my niece, "medio-cruzado" my written (and often spoken) Spanish tends to be. And so I thank, with love, Rocío Magaña for her patient help in fine-tuning the contents of this work so that the song's contents may fly straight - as opposed to 'half-knotted'.

Most importantly, I dedicate this song to migrants throughout the world - with papers and without - who enrich all cultures by the simple fact of their presence.

The world turns and we move with it, yet we often become so trapped within our borders that we forget that Sun and Moon shine on us all the same.

May we all learn to listen to, learn from, and enjoy each other's stories.

Son Antropo no es la primera canción que escribo en español, pero es la que mas me ha enorgullese. Es una canción con raíces profundas.

Los ritmos guaracheros que corren a lo largo de mi son son influencia del incomparable Trio Matamoros. (Yo pasaría el resto de mis días felíz y contento simplemente tratando de imitar la vivacidad de la guitarra de Miguel Matamoros)

El gozo con que canto esta canción se debe en gran parte a la contagiosa alegría y energía de las indomables guarachas del maestro Polo Montañez.

También estan las raices locales: Segunda Quimbamba y Radio Jarocho. Estos guardianes de la Bomba y Plena puertorriqueña y el Son Jarocho mexicano respectivamente han sido inspiración y guía en mis labor creativa con su apoyo a brazos abiertos, su amistad, y su elegante y mágica ejecución de ritmos centenearios que te hacen bailar.

En general, ya que mi lengua dominante es el inglés, me he dado la tarea de estudiar y aprender de las tradiciones y ritmos folkloricos latinoamericanos que encarnan esta canción, una labor que ha requerido bastante concentracion y trabajo. Habiendo dicho esto, tengo claro que mi español escrito (y a veces también el hablado) es “medio cruzado,” como dice mi sobrina. Así que agradezco con cariño a Rocío Magaña por su paciente ayuda afinando la letra de este son para que su mensaje llegara directo—y no tan anudado.

Por encima de todo, dedico esta canción a los migrantes de todo el mundo—con y sin papeles—quienes enriquecen todas las culturas con el simple hecho de su presencia.

El mundo gira y nosotros nos movemos en el, y aun asi nos hemos atrapado tanto entre nuestras fronteras que nos olividamos que el sol y la luna brillan igual sobre todos.

Ojala todos que aprendamos a escuchar, aprender y disfrutrar de cada una de nuestras historias.
