about
"Silence falls from each tree to the ground."
--- Leos Janacek
Dedicated to the victims of the massacres in Paris, November 2015.
Milpa was written and wrought in early November 2015 as part of a song challenge for You Don't Know Jersey - curated by my good friend and fellow Jersey songster Aquino.
The theme at hand was Thanksgiving. My first thought was to circle things back to the agricultural Milpa, or the Three Sisters of the pre-Columbian Americas.
How marvelous it is that we can attend to the gifts of nature and enjoy her bounty. How marvelous it is that we can take what grows in this earth and mix and cook that we may eat. How wonderful it is, too, to share these magical feats with those we love, dear friends, old and new.
Buen provecho!

lyrics
Milpa
Silence falls from each tree to the ground.
Autumn's fire burning within.
O dear animals, bless these our seeds.
O sunset, color our horizon
Things they come and things they go
A door opens and our family grows.
The heart of this house is our kitchen
And so we give thanks for all we that have.
Three sisters raise their arms to the sky
in praise of beasts and birds in flight
The fish that swim and the breathing green
We give thanks to thee.
OoooooooooooooooO
Three sisters raise their arms to the sky
in praise of beasts and birds in flight
The fish that swim and the breathing green
We give thanks to thee.
Nuestra milpa es una oración
por quienes buscan pan y paz.
El maíz, la calabaza y el frijol
bailan las hermanas hermosas
Silence falls from each tree to the ground.
Autumn's fire burning within.
El silencio cae del roble
El otoño enciende el alma
Things they come and things they go
But this love for you it only grows
Las cosas vienen, las cosas van.
Y crece y crece por ti este amor.
Three sisters raise their arms to the sky
por quienes buscan pan y paz .
The fish that swim and the breathing green
bailan las hermanas hermosas.
Nuestra milpa es una oración
in praise of beasts and birds in flight
El maíz, la calabaza y el frijol
We give thanks to thee.
OoooooooooooooooooO.
